Beyond Messy Manes: How Neurodiversity Shows Up in Horse Riding

In the riding arena, neurodiversity (ND) doesn’t look like a textbook definition. It looks raw, real, and completely varied. As an equestrian coach, understanding how ADHD, autism, or AuDHD present themselves in the saddle is the key to unlocking a rider’s true potential.

How It Commonly Shows Up in the Arena

Every neurodivergent rider is unique, but under pressure or excitement, their entry into the arena often follows distinct patterns:

  • The High-Energy Youth: Bouncing in full of chat, perhaps late. Their pony is half-groomed, the girth is loose, bridle keepers are left undone, and boots are unzipped. They seem distracted, but their brain is just processing at 100 mph.
  • 🤫 The Quiet Hyper-Focuser: Turning up early, saying nothing, avoiding eye contact. They might mount and walk away immediately to start warming up, seemingly ignoring the coach while deeply locking into their own world.
  • 🗣️ The Overwhelmed Adult: Arriving with a tidal wave of words—explaining every traffic delay, weekly disaster, and horse issue. They aren’t being rude by not asking how you are; their brain is simply offloading anxiety so they can prepare for the lesson.

The Coach’s Role: Read the Input, Forget the Chaos

As a coach, my job isn’t to judge or penalise how a rider enters the arena. Safety comes first—checking tack, securing girths, and zipping boots (even for the adults!).

Once safety is cleared, the way they entered becomes vital data. It tells me exactly where their nervous system is at today, allowing me to tailor the coaching session forward.

Unlocking Dynamic Equestrian Strengths

When you look past the initial chaos, neurodivergent riders possess an incredible array of natural strengths that make them phenomenal equestrians:

  • 🧠 Instinct & Timing: Exceptional quick thinking, rapid reactions, bravery, and an innate feel for the horse’s rhythm.
  • 🎯 Deep Learning: An outstanding ability to master complex movements and technical exercises seamlessly when fully focused.
  • 🐴 The Unbreakable Bond: Most importantly, a profound love for their horse and a fierce intolerance for cruelty.

Horses don’t care about unzipped boots or messy manes. They respond to energy. Because of this, a bond forms between an ND rider and their horse that goes far deeper than traditional training can reach. The horse will always try for them.

Designing for Success in the Saddle

Equestrian coaching for neurodivergent minds is about maximising strengths to support the weaknesses.

By using patient, targeted exercises, technical gaps eventually dissipate as the movements transition into permanent muscle memory. It requires patience, but the payoff is immense: you will have the most creative, inspiring, and interesting coaching sessions of your life. It will never, ever be boring. 🐎
