Reverse-Engineering Success: How to Unlock Your Brain’s Natural Patterns

One of the most powerful tools for understanding how your neurodivergent brain works best is already hidden in your past.

When planning feels overwhelming, working memory drops out, or task initiation feels flat-out impossible, trying to force a standard linear method rarely works. Instead, the key to unlocking your focus lies in reverse-engineering your past wins.

The Success Audit: Deconstructing Your Wins

Think of a time when something genuinely worked for you—a breakthrough, a project that flowed, or a moment you’re proud of. Now, look closer at the tiny details of that success:

  • 📍 Environment: Where exactly were you sitting or standing? Who was involved?
  • The Catalyst: What precise cue or event kicked off your momentum?
  • 🚧 The Hurdles: What nearly derailed you, and how did you naturally pivot?

Identifying Your Dominant Processing Modality

Once you look across a few different past successes, a goldmine of patterns will begin to emerge. Ask yourself: How was I actually processing information in those moments?

  • 🔊 Auditory: Was I talking it out with someone or using voice notes?
  • 👁️ Visual: Did I need to see it mapped out on a whiteboard or dashboard?
  • 🏃‍♂️ Kinaesthetic: Was it driven by movement, doing, and hands-on trial-and-error?
  • 🧠 Emotional & Urgent: Did I need high stakes, deep meaning, or a bit of pressure to fully engage?

Why This Works: The Power of Emotive Memory

For neurodivergent brains, logical memory can struggle to access the exact steps needed to organise a task. However, your emotive memory stores the pathway.

When something worked in the past, your brain saved the positive emotional charge. That feeling acts like a structural key, unlocking the exact conditions your brain needs to get things done.

Instead of beating yourself up and asking: “Why can’t I just do this right now?”
We shift the narrative to: “How did I successfully do this before—and how can I rebuild those exact conditions today?”

Design Around Your Wiring

Shifting your approach from standard productivity advice to past pattern-recognition isn’t a weakness. It is strategic self-leadership.

Different wiring requires a different strategy. Once you map out your personal processing modalities, you can stop fighting your brain and start designing your work, life, and goals around how you actually function best. 🌊
